The Pathway to the Referee

A person follows a pathway to his dream

A gang member follows a pathway to his colors

The Pathway (English sonnet)

I wandered down this pathway all alone
To breathe in things I never felt before
With every step my heart cried out for more
A dream perhaps has scented this unknown
-
What purposes would this journey help restore
What wind of thought would timelessness dethrone
What tattered place was waiting to be sown
Were mindless things this pathway breathed ignore
-
So on I went to leave all else behind
As memories called play with us awhile
Distractions came and tried to cloud my choice
-
Alone with pathway soul of me resigned
As in the distance wonders would compile
And in its midst a soft familiar voice

(If one takes a second look at this sonnet, it can easily be taken at many levels. We can take it as a walk in life. We can take it as a path to, or back to, a loved one. We can take it as the steps to a goal. These are just a few examples. Please, share what this poem brought out in you. - From where I sit, I am very happy with my life. Many are the pathways that brought me here. If that young man, who started on his pathway, could see the old fellow he would become, I wonder what would play in his mind. I was fortunate to rarely have to walk alone. On each new pathway there were people at my side to guide me, to help, to encourage, to keep me company. Then there was Arlene, my wife, my partner, my lover, my friend, my companion and so much more. Now I don't consider myself a religious man. And I certainly don't force my beliefs on anyone. You may catch me talking to God. I will admit, while on my pathways I talked to God. I believe all those, who are now gone, are still with me on my current pathway. And where is my current pathway heading? Let's find out.)

Talk about pathways, here's: Vangelis and Vanessa Mae "Roxane's Veil"

You may laugh, but some take the pathway to the bitter side

According to the National Gang Intelligence Center of the Federal Bureau of Investigation ihere are approximately 1.4 million active street, prison, and outlaw gang members comprising more than 33,500 gangs in the United States. One of the newest suburban gangs is the Willow Drive Devils. The Willow Drive Devils is a motorcycle gang (without motorcycles) comprised of a group of dads who cruise the suburb of Willow in their Hyundai, thunk up by the gang at Above Average. In this episode, one of the members is trying to earn his colors by passing the gang's test.
It is rumored the Willow Drive Devils can be found on weekends, when there is no baseball, basketball or football at the Willow Target parking lot. So look out. "Referee - Suburban Sons"

The Last Summer Rose to Hell's Club

Time was ticking as flowers danced through their summers

Time stood still as moment danced through our memories

The Last Summer Rose (repeating poem)

I think back to days without end
Where dreams that came true were the trend
With kisses around every bend
And angels were there to attend
A time without worries or woes
The days of the last summer rose
-
Youth’s madness we put on display
As hand in hand we met each day
And let our hearts show us the way
To havens of lovers’ repose
Where fantasies frolic and stray
The days of the last summer rose
-
Each heartbeat held moments of you
Each smile and my world would renew
Such magic that from your eyes flows
Such heavens for wiles to pass through
The promised tomorrow in view
The days of the last summer rose
-
Caresses as sun slowly set
And moonlight its mood to impose
A scent one can never forget
Recalling the day that we met
As twilight beheld silhouette
The days of the last summer rose
-
I wonder about times like those
Did they truly happen at all
These pictures on yesterday’s wall
As sunsets again seems to fall
Sweet flower please help me recall
The days of the last summer rose

(Here is another expression of repeating style of poetry. The matching verse to the final rhyme moves farther away as the song continues. I chose the beginning to finally place the matching rhyme as a symbol of the beginnings of these memories.- Next to the day Arlene and I were wed, came our youthful summers. Living in San Francisco, with so much to do, plus it was the magic 60's, Arlene and I were truly lucky. It was hard for Arlene's parents to keep us apart, when I got Arlene to enjoy going to summer school with me. (My teachers were that good.) And besides kissing, I took Arlene to museums, operas, theaters (we were ushers, which permitted us to see the shows for free), and much more. Movies, back then, were only $1.00. Everything was much cheaper. Summers were working, sleeping and Arlene. Arlene made scrapbooks of our adventures together. As those summers ticked by and became distant moonlights, Arlene would pull out one of those scrapbooks. Even as we go over the pictures and notes, one more time, it's hard to believe, we did all those things.)

Call me sentimental, here is the sung I've chosen for this theme:  "The Last Rose of Summer"

From romance to madness

Webster Hall, built in 1886 in New York City's Manhattan district, is considered the first nightclub. Now, Antonio Maria Da Silva, of Amdsfilms, brings us Hell's Club. Amdsfilms is a Paris, France internet production company, specializing in mashups. Hell's club is no ordinary nightclub. It a well produced mashup of scenes from our favorite movies forming a new and timeless story line.
I hope you will be as impressed as I was with Antonio's creation. "HELL'S CLUB. NEW MASHUP AMDSFILMS."

Love’s Roundelay to Floating Cards

Love floats on to the magic of a lover's song

Cards float on to the magic of a cardist's skill

Love’s Roundelay (repeating poem)

Come for this while sit by my side
And put all our worries away
And bring a new hue to the day
Come for this while sit by my side
Let loose what our heartbeats provide
A rhythm for love’s roundelay
-
The long day has come to an end
Come for this while sit by my side
And drift where our wishes abide
To our sacred haven ascend
And there with our passions transcend
And free every dream held inside
-
What cause could this purpose deride
What shadows are hidden from sight
Whose hand dares dim our precious light
Whose word boasts our whim is denied
Come for this while sit by my side
And bid every dark cloud goodnight
-
Now here in this quiet with me
Let’s brush worldly reason aside
For what do true lovers to hide
As time steps aside patiently
For us to explore satin sea
Come for this while sit by my side

(Here is a love poem with an interesting rhyme scheme. Along with the rhyme scheme, we have a repeating line. One more thing to set a mind to wonder. Why does the singer refer to the "satin sea" and ask to, "sit by my side." - It was 1990 when Arlene and I purchased our house in San Francisco. We had passed through a lot, but we were still together. We now had a working fire place and moments to ourselves. We revisited the past of our dream in words and deeds. And more... Where do we go from here? Here came the Masons. They were taken by the way Arlene and I danced together. We had been partners for over 25 years. There was always something special when we were together. Now, with all we a been through, it seems that our feelings for each other radiated. Arlene and I were not dance champions, but at a level where others wanted to join us on the dance floor. Add to this two masonic mentors. who wanted to promote their latest endeavor (me) and Arlene and I were invited to other organizations' parties. The parties, for the Masons, Arlene and I eventual planned and threw, were well attended. As Arlene and I left the dance floor and saw our guests dancing , we thought to ourselves, here is our love.)

This calls for a love song: Marcomé "Twitter Me Some Love"

Ready for more magic

Houdini billed himself as "The King of Cards", but his skill at card manipulation has been replaced by the artistry of Dai Vernon,, Tony Slydini,, Ed Marlo, S.W. Erdnase, Richard Turner and Ricky Jay. Vying for a spot among these greats is young cardist Zach Mueller. A cardist is a practitioner of the non-magical, artistic manipulation of playing cards. In this viral video Zach, who is featured by Fortaine Cards, makes cards float.
Keep in mind there is no magic or special effects involved. We are witnessing Zach's mastery alone. "FLOATING CARDS | Cardistry | Zach Mueller"

Door To Goodbye to Look At Me

He knows it's over as he opens the door to goodbye

Before he goes he only has one request - Look at me

Door To Goodbye (English sonnet)

Can you see the door close to our goodbye
So many and more the tears put away
So many before our hearts learned to stray
And no one was sure of the reason why
-
No time to explore what words had to say
No time to re-shore what pain put awry
The times that we swore to give it a try
Have led to the door before us today
-
Those reasons galore now fall from our lips
Wild passions now sore such flames to ignite
To even a score uncertain as this
-
And into this war a stranger known slips
A chance to restore our reason to fight
And see that this door is closed with a kiss

(A sonnet about a relationship that didn't work. There is more to this sonnet than meets the passing eye. Did you notice that there is a second rhyme going on (door, more, before, sure, etc.)? - Most of my experience with break ups came from friends. Early in my life, Arlene and I hug out with a lot of entertainers, who had trouble managing a careers and relationships. As we all grew older, it was quite surprising, who broke up. Problems were covered up so well that no one suspected there was anything but happiness. When I was cheating on Arlene, she stayed with me. Surely she knew. Arlene was much too intelligent. When our children were born, it was my turn. Arlene and I had radically different views on parenthood. I believed everything was for family. Arlene agreed, but felt we should set aside some moments just for us.This is how our challenge started and Rick came into my life. Who would have guessed, this hard working PTA president was having an extramarital affair? What was I to do? There was the children. There were all the times I cheated on Arlene. There was the love, which started with a tear so many years ago. The children matured and Rick disappeared. Arlene and I made it! The door came and the final kiss came when Arlene died.)

For all of this, I have chosen: Roy Orbison "Crying"

You got room for one more break up

As of 2014, 85% of relationships end in a break up and 50% of marriages end in divorce. This may sound bad, but 3 of 4 marriages once ended in divorce. DUMB Video brings us a story of 1 of the 85. The boy is trying to keep the relationship alive, but he faces one major problem. DUMB Video is a sketch comedy group based in New York City. I only mention this to impress you with my vast knowledge (or lack thereof).
This video will not help anyone one in their next break up. "DUMB Video: Look At Me"

Distant Sunsets to Musicless Bee Gees "Stayin' Alive"

Tankas of lifetimes and memories

Remember the Bee Gees without the music

Cruel Life (tanka)

How cruel was her life
To spread across her mirror
All the memories
Of a life rich in beauty
Many lonesome tears ago

Distant Sunsets (tanka)

Shadows came to play
Where flowers once had their way
Those far away days
Which in our hearts still blazes
As we gaze distant sunsets

Ocean Of Memories (tanka)

Each moment of time
Ticking by to take its place
As we drift along
Grasping at what will become
An ocean of memories

(I hope you enjoyed these tankas. Though they generally deal with life and memories, they are open to interpretation. Keep in mind, these are "romantic" viewpoints, specific to their piece. - Life is interesting. I studied to be a music teacher. I graduated from San Francisco State College and was ready to go for my teaching certificate. I don't know why, but James Kearney was at my graduation. He was the principal of my high school, and remembered me. He then worked at the board of education and predicted to me the bleak future of music programs in public schools. So I went with a career a Chevron Corporation. I started off by saying, "Life is interesting." At Chevron, I was encouraged to develop my creative skills. They even paid to develop it. In the end. I was paid to create. I became a soccer coach when my son became interested in sports. I was so successful I was asked to continue. For 13 years  I would go on and even coached for an elementary and Catholic school. Chevron (being highly into charity) even gave me paid time off to coach. For 6 years, I studied to be an orator for the Masons. I helped create a masonic training and information program in San Francisco and was an instructor there. After so many years, a teacher retired. Life is interesting,)

Since we're talking about life, here is an interesting song. I hope you like it:
Willie Nelson, Wyilon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash "The Highwayman"

Before we get too elevated, let's step back to the Bee Gees

It is estimated that there are about 3,500 species of bees in North America, and over 20,000 bee species worldwide and the Bee Gees were never one of them. For those unfamiliar, the Bee Gees were an Australian pop music group formed in 1958, consisting of brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb.  In 1978 they won a Grammy Award for their hit "Stayin' Alive". Thanks to Mario Wienerroither, we have come across an enlightening video of the boys and this great disco hit. All of the distracting music has been removed to heighten our enjoyment.
If you like this version, the full album is NOT available at Amazon. You'll just have to hit the replay button "Musicless Musicvideo / BEE GEES - Stayin' Alive"

Voices Of Why to Pranking Walmart

Memories become the voices that fill a heart with why

Mischief become the voices that fill an ear with why

Voices Of Why (poem)

Those voices now seem far away
The laughter of children at play
Reminder of some yesterday
Which still has the freedom to stray
Away from this world full of why
-
Delight is the sound of their glee
So bright was their sweet memory
Pure right was their reason to be
What might be was their destiny
Their sight held the secret to why
-
For they held the keys to the sky
Because was their reason to try
And they were the reason to sigh
As they kissed their worries goodbye
And danced on the edges of why
-
Time wonders just where did they go
Those voices that hearts used to know
Enchantment from so long ago
These reasons for its gentle flow
Soft tears hold its answer to why
-
One wonders if they will renew
Those voices of bright mornings’ dew
Those so many dreams that came true
Reflections of all we went through
Your kiss keeps the seasons of why

(There are many ways, or levels, to take this poem. It is a song of loss and hope, whether an individual, individuals, time, places, moments or the myriad of things that make memories. Did you notice the rhyme progression? Ii follows the vowel progression: A E I O U and sometimes "Why" (Y). - As I grow old, I am reminded of the many, many, many things I will never do again. Special places closing and I will never see them again, Familiar faces are vanishing, and I had a lot. The whole world is changing and I feel I no longer fit in. I have performed 147 masonic funerals from 1999 to 2010 and served as chaplain in many more. I have buried many friends and teachers. Sadly, this has made me somewhat less sensitive to death. Life has allowed me to do so much and people have elevated me to heights, most never experience. The wonder which was a life is coning to close. Sure, I get depressed. But in all my gratitude, I still wonder why. People ask me, as grand as my life was, would I live it again? I simply smile ans answer no.)

What song could be more fitting: Barbra Streisand "The Way We Were"

How about a few laughs to spark rainbows

In 1950, Sam Walton purchased a store from Luther E. Harrison in Bentonville, Arkansas, and opened Walton's 5 & 10. Thus began the legend of Walmart. Walmart has a questionable reputation, from its "ageless" greeters to its "picturesque" clientele. The last thing they need is a prank phone call. Greg Benson, of Mediocre Films, and his pal, comedian Plymouth J Cliffords (Master Prank Phone Caller) added to the wackiness which is Walmart.
Actually, Walmart gets a lot of crazy phone calls, but not all are well orchestrated prank phone calls that go viral on YouTube. "PRANKING WALMART!"

Lovers’ Fields to How to Find Food in the Wild

Some wander the fields to find love

Some wander the fields to find food (or laughs)

Lovers’ Fields (villanelle)

What blossoms flowers put upon display
To add a touch of beauty to the air
In fields where lovers come to spend their day
-
If I were now to reach what would you say
Will I still see the sun or bleak despair
What blossoms flowers put upon display
-
A chance perhaps a moment just to stray
Who knows what special memories may flare
In fields where lovers come to spend their day
-
My heart is offered up to pave the way
To splendors which your beauty will make rare
What blossoms flowers put upon display
-
And if your answer causes some dismay
A dream of sadness will be waiting there
In fields where lovers come to spend their day
-
So take my hand and lay all else away
That for this while the two of us may share
What blossoms flowers put upon display
In fields where lovers come to spend their day

(It has been a while since we had a villanelle, Let me share two little insights. Flowers can mean flowers or lovers. Fields can also mean imagination or places where hearts stroll. With these two insights, what else is hidden in this villanelle? - I mentioned these two things because Arlene and I were the flowers and our life together was one of the fields. We were never financially rich, but we had more than our share of luck. Somehow we ram into people and situations that would open up opportunities. One of these opportunities was a trip to Savannah, Georgia for a Halloween weekend. We stumbled into a deal we couldn't pass up. Savannah was beautiful. We signed up for the ghost tours, but a young hotel desk clerk suggested we might enjoy the fraternity parties, that were going on more. We took his suggestion and for two nights Arlene and I were uninvited, but welcome guests (thanks to the dancing), at countless parties. How we got around or back to the hotel is still unclear. But it was all free, it was fun and the clerk couldn't have been more right. On the airplane trip back home, I apologized to Arlene, we didn't see any ghosts. She kissed me and said, "Are you sure we didn't see any?")

If that wasn't haunting enough, this should do it: Sonny James "Young Love"

Is anyone hungry

As of 2014, it was estimated that 40% of McDonald’s profits come from the sales of Happy Meals. Now, one won't find McDonald's Happy Meals outdoors, growing in the wild. We're hungry. We're outside, What are we gonna do? Maybe Gregg. at You Suck At Cooking, can help us out. Wait a minute. We're already outside. We're hungry. Can Gregg show us how to find some food or at least how to recharge our cell phone (so we can enjoy more of Martin's poetry)?
We better watch the video or find the nearest McDonald's, before we go more crazy. "How to Find Food in the Wild - You Suck at Cooking (episode 16)"
