The Little Gift to Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen
A stranger spreads a gift of memories
A stranger spreads a gift of complete nonsense
The Little Gift (Italian sonnet)
Each day would find him strumming in the smiles
Of people as they stumbled each their way
Retuning confidence to meet life’s trials
Was just a little gift he gave away
His face seemed somehow hidden by his songs
Which knew a welcome path to every heart
And in each person’s memory belongs
This place a little gift will have its start
A stranger came into the neighborhood
He heard a different ringing to the tune
Deceived by shallow reasons that he should
He took his little gift to meet its ruin
A new day came but he’s no longer there
Yet people still wear smiles upon their face
He’s gone but not a person is aware
Somehow a little gift now takes his place
People receive a gift for a price in this Italian sonnet. Most sonnet writers, now a days, use the Shakespearean style of sonnet writing. Even the practitioners of the modern sonnet use the Shakespearean outline (three stanzas followed by a couplet). If one follows me, they will notice that use various forms of sonnets. One of these is the Italian sonnet. It uses four quatrains and no couplet. I find it is great for story telling.
The streets of San Francisco is full of wonders. One of these was a singer, guitar player, who took up stage in front of a burrito joint in the business section of Market Street. He just showed up one day. He was amazing and played a wide variety of music. The street that the stranger chose was wide, so that the crowds he attracted never blocked pedestrian traffic. For the burrito joint, he was good for business. Now, here's the story. Not only was the stranger amazingly talented, in me his songs evoked memories. As I looked around, his songs seemed be having the same effect on others. When he first appeared there were whispers: "He's so good. What is he doing here?" "Maybe he's homeless." "Maybe he's on drugs." There where many more whispers. Most of which where negative, as grand as his music was. For days and week this continued. Some of us even got there early anticipating his arrival. Eventually the negative whispers all but stopped. Shortly thereafter the stranger stopped showing up. No one knew what happened to him. Many smiles where born those days. Many of those of us who remember those days occasionally pass each other and share a smile.
A lot can be read into this story. I'm sure everything can be explained away. But let us dreamers dream. Here are some facts, about the story where reality touch dreams, Good music can awaken memories. People who are experiencing a common positive moment, like music awakening a memory, tend to smile at each other. Most of us tend to smile when we pass a familiar face, even if we don't really know them. But it is only a smile. Once again, reality touches dreams. A smile can be the beginning of many great things. A smile can brighten someone's day. Never, never, never cut short the power of a smile. That power is ours. Enjoy.
Here's to the memory of the guitar: Bread "Guitar Man"
